Florence Nightingale

Nightingale Home Care, Inc. is named after the 20th century British nurse and humanitarian, Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing.  At age seventeen, she felt called by God to serve as a nurse, though against her parents’ wishes.

During that time, there were no female nurses.  After she finished her training, she continued to face opposition from the community.  She and her colleagues struggled to gain recognition by doctors, but she never gave up her passion to help others.

Eventually her insistence on cleanliness successfully slowed down many rapidly spreading diseases and cut the death rate immensely during the Crimean War.  She has since become one of the most celebrated nurses in history.

The Nightingale pledge taken by new nurses was named in her honor, and the annual International Nurses Day (May 12th) is celebrated around the globe on her birthday.
